Making Paper Automata

I’m thrilled to announce that my new book ‘Making Paper Automata’ is now available for pre-order. I’ve received my author’s copy and it looks great! You can see a flick through of the book here on my Instagram feed. The publication date is slated for March 25th, you can pre-order it from all good book shops including the links here.

Blurb from the book…

“This practical guide explains the full process of designing and making your own automata with paper. Packed with advice and encouragement, it features an irresistible selection of finished examples to give you inspiration and shows you how to breathe life into mechanical characters. Its clear instruction and delightful ideas will be enjoyed by anyone armed with a pair of scissors and a creative imagination.”

The aim of the book is to give the reader a helping hand into the world of designing and making your own paper automata. There are some walk through projects but most of it is about how you can design your own projects. There are sections from tools and techniques and the design process, right through to designing your own cam based automata, using paper gears and making model that make sound. Hopefully everything you need to get you started on the road to Making Paper Automata.

You may recognise the project on the cover as The Rise of the Mammals from my website. It features a vignette showing the moment of realisation in the mouse’s mind when she realises that her kind are about to take over the world!

Rise of the Mammals initial sketch.

The final project uses a two stage gear box to slow down the dinosaur moment and a double cam to speed up the mouse. You can see the result on the website here where you can download the project to keep you going until your pre-ordered book arrives!
