The oyster catcher is a beautiful black and white wading bird with a distinctive long orange/red beak and “peep - peep - peep” call very similar to the paper whistle from earlier projects. A perfect subject for making into an automata with added sound effects!
The project is now ready for you to download and make yourself. The bird flies above the box, the wings driven by a pair of thin push rods with the main pushrod driving the body up and down. Inside the box is a set of square bellows with a single paper whistle attached.
The crank on the side of the main box operates a Scotch yoke mechanism, a simple mechanism that is used to convert rotary motion from the handle into up and down movement of the main push rod.
This serves two purposes: it pumps the bellows and makes the bird's wings flap. As the bird flies it calls in a surprisingly realist way!
