A recent trip across Spain reminded me of the abundance of maker materials that can be foraged whilst enjoying a walk in the woods. On a semi-wooded hillside above the beautiful city of Cuenca we stumbled upon a quiet clearing. Luckily I had my maker travel kit with me so we set about collecting together some likely materials to see what I could make.
I was quite taken with these cone scales…
The shape reminded me of the side view of a fish, or with the addition of a twig beak, perhaps a bird. And so it was that we come to the latest #WILDmaking project on the www.robives.com website, the Pine Cone Bird.
Made from cones, twigs, cone parts and the addition of a few items from your handy maker kit this project should be adaptable to be recreated using materials you can find on your travels. The experience of Wild Making is well worth seeking out. Working with unfamiliar materials brings whole new challenges and rewards. We had set out on a walk with no clear plan of what we might do, no route in mind and no maker project planned. Being led by what we encountered, being open to new ideas was a really satisfying way to spend a warm day in a leafy glade above Cuenca. We spent a while in the clearing with no one else around, as time passed the birds of the area began to accept our presence a little, coming out from their hiding places to forage and sing, it was really quite magical.
We enjoyed the rest of our walk, leaving the Pine Cone Bird behind for someone else to discover. We are now on the train to Granada , maybe some #UrbanMaking next!?
Not wanting to waste the collection of pine cone scales we collected, my travel companion made this beautiful cone flower. Isn’t it wonderful!
