The paper automata featured on the front cover of my new book “Making Paper Automata” is called “Rise of the Mammals” The model features a slightly nervous tiny mammal holding her ground in the face of a big blue dinosaur knowing in her heart that the earth will soon belong to her!

When I was looking through my computer for a video of the model I couldn’t find the original files so I decided to remake the model and make new video clips. It turns out it is a fun project to build! If you are a premium subscriber to this newsletter you can download the parts file at the end of this page. Thank you for your support! The file is also available on the main site here www.robives.com

At the heart of the model is a two stage gear used to slow down the movement of the dinosaur. The output gear is linked to a crank which drives the dino up and down. The dino’s head is mounted on a four bar linkage making it tilt forward as it approaches the tiny mammal.

Double Gear

To make the mammal move quicker than the crank handle turns there are cam lobes mounted onto the drive axle meaning that the proto-mouse moves back and forth twice for each turn of the crank handle.

Two lobe cam shaft.

The parts file comes as an editable downloadable pdf file with full colour parts printed front and back as well as a set of outline-only parts for if you would prefer to add your own colours. The assembly instruction are available online here

As already mentioned, the parts file is available to download at the end of this page if you are a premium subscriber to this newsletter. Alternatively, why not become a premium member of www.robives.com to download that and all the other hundreds of projects on www.robives.com for free!? Final option, you can always download the file from the site here for £6 or equivalent. Whatever you choose, I do hope you have fun making the project!

Downloadable pdf parts file.

I’m delighted to say that the book is now available to buy - at least in the UK. I’m afraid that if you are in the US it is not due until October though of course you can always order it from a UK supplier if you can’t wait. I’ve already had a fair bit of lovely feedback from people who have got their hands on the book which is always a thrill - thank you!
